2001 Merlot

2001 Merlot

Tasting Notes

Our 2001 Merlot is rich, round, layered with earthy cherry, floral and wild berries. Hints of violets, roasted coffee, spices and leather weave through the harmonious finish. This wine is elegant with a firmly sculpted framework of acid and polished tannins that goes for a long ride on your palate.

The Year

The 2001 vintage year was unusual in that nothing unusual happened: Walla Walla experienced average temperatures and rainfall during the growing season, and the grapes matured beautifully without any troubles from Mother Nature.

Awards & Accolades

94 Points | Wine & Spirits

“Bright and zingy, with layer upon layer of jazzy blackberry, cherry, subtle oak tones and finely tuned tannins, finishing with light tobacco note, ultimately long and elegant with well-mannered power.”

– Wine Spectator, 92 points

“…Complex nose combines red currant, cherry, raspberry, mocha and baking spices. Fat, smooth and lush, with generous flavors of red fruits and game. Showed increasing sweetness as it opened in the glass. Finishes with sweet, fine tannins and very good length. A lovely, open-knit Merlot that seems best suited for drinking over the next couple years.”

– Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

“The warm, broad, strawberry/cherry flavors of Pepper Bridge Vineyard fruit are in evidence here. There are also hints of dill and bell pepper, leather and saddle, some well-managed herbal notes that add interest and balance.”

– Paul Gregutt, Wine Enthusiast
